When it comes to doing an engine conversion the easiest way to do it is to have a complete running vehicle or half cut so that everything can be tested before installation. This is not always possible so when buying an engine or conversion package make a list of what else you will need to buy because if things like Air flow meters, fuel pumps, ignition modules, and ECMs can start to bump the price up and that good price you saw might not be so sweet anymore.

Compression tests are very important and can be a good bargaining chip for you. when doing a compression test make sure you have a powerfull battery, remove all the spark plugs and disconnect the ignition coil/module . the results from all cylinders should be within 10%of eachother. if you find one cylinder has zero, squirt some engine oil down the spark plug hole and keep cranking it over, if the compression not comes up then that would indicate worn or damaged piston rings. If the compression remains at zero then that would indicate a bent or burnt valve or poor valve seal. depending on your mechanical ability you could decide to but a damgaged engine at a reduced price or just move on and find a better one.
